The mhGAP community toolkit, more recently renamed the Community Mental Health toolkit, is a field test version and an integral part of WHO’s Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP), and aims at scaling up services for people with mental health conditions to achieve universal health coverage. However, the Community MH Toolkit has a different aim than mhGAP and its (humanitarian) intervention guides.

The Community MH toolkit provides guidance for programme managers on how to identify local mental health needs and tailor community services to match these needs. It offers practical information and necessary tools for community providers to promote mental health, prevent mental health conditions and expand access to mental health services.

The mhGAP Humanitarian Intervention Guide https://www.who.int/mental_health/publications/mhgap_hig/en/ contains first-line management recommendations for mental, neurological and substance use conditions for non-specialist health-care providers (doctors, nurses, midwives) in humanitarian emergencies where access to specialists and treatment options is limited.

mhGAP HIG is a tool that aims to support general health facilities in areas affected by humanitarian emergencies in assessing and managing acute stress, grief, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, epilepsy, intellectual disability, harmful substance use and risk of suicide.

The mhGAP Humanitarian IG tool is an adaptation of WHO’s mhGAP Intervention Guide, the evidence-based manual for the management of these conditions in non-specialized health settings (again, for doctors, nurses and midwives).
